#GivingTuesday a New Tradition

The Tuesday after Thanksgiving may become a new tradition for giving back.

#GivingTuesday is being billed as “the giving season’s opening day“.   I love that concept.

GivingTuesday.org is attempting to start an annual movement. On Tuesday November 27, 2012 the group asked “charities, families, businesses and individuals to come together to transform the way people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season“.

This a wonderful idea.  They encourage you to “tell everyone you can about what you are doing and why it matters. Join a national celebration of our great tradition of generosity”.

The Chronicle for Philanthropy reports that Network for Good, a processor of online gifts, reported a spike in giving this Tuesday. The total number of donations more than doubled, to 113 percent, on #GivingTuesday versus the Tuesday after Thanksgiving 2011. The amount collected Tuesday was also 55 percent more than the amount of donations collected on Monday.

It is clear that the movement is growing.  Looking forward to 2013.
